Diatom is an organic product and is formed from millions of microscopic one-cell algae. Diatom can be safely fed to animals or used as a dust spray for parasite control, the action being strictly mechanical. The microscopically sharp edges of the product pierce the protective coating of the organism. The parasites then dry out in a few hours and die. Diatom can be used as a dust against fleas, lice and other external pests on dogs, cats, pigs and chickens. Use full strength as a powder rub into dogs or cats coats and sprinkle on pigs and add to the dusting boxes for chickens etc. Diatom can also be used as a dust or spray to control massed flies in pastures, in and around ground and buildings and on manure piles. Dust on 10 kilos per acre in quiet air. For liquid spray mix 1 kilo per 5 litres of water and agitate whilst using. Diatom can be used on stored grains and seed and is an effective replacement for malathion. To achieve best results and the most effective protection it is recommended that seeds and grain are treated immediately after harvest by lightly coating the outside of most all kernels or seeds with dust. Applying Diatom directly as it is moved into storage best does this. The rate of application is 3 kgs per ton. Barley, corn, oats, rice, buckwheat, wheat, sorghum and mixtures of these grains may be treated in this manner. Dusting yards like pastures or animal enclosures can work against a wide variety of lawn pests. While spreading is suitable for grass or trees, spraying should be used on shrubs or other plants. To protect fruit trees, sprinkle a liberal amount of Diatom on the ground and the trunks. Also paint the trunks with the mixture of flax-soap, Diatom and water. The protective buffer zone will impede the migration of various fruit tree flies and worms as well as Japanese beetles. Spread Diatom several times per year for continued control, particularly after heavy rains. Diatom is not harmful to earthworms since they are structurally different from insects. Unconfirmed reports of field trial indicate that Diatom provides a practical way for controlling aphids, bollworm, boll weevil, leafhopper, leaf perforator, lygus, red spider mite, salt marsh caterpillar and thrips. Diatom as a feed supplement: - Increases the digestibility of the feed Helps in supplying adequate minerals Aids in greater utilization of feed value; it will economise feed as less feed passes into the large intestine as waste matter Causes noticeably better health in animals with less sickness and a faster gain to market An absence of internal parasites in the intestines and stools of animals An effective animal wormer because worms and soft-bodied insects are unable to withstand the killing action of Diatom Contains many trace minerals making it acceptable for animal nutrition. For the control of internal parasites and animal nutrition suggested feeding rates are: Beef Cattle 2% by weight of total dry rations. 4% for ten days as a purge. Calves 1oz in morning milk Dairy Cattle 4% by weight Poultry 5% in feed Pigs 2% by weight of total dry rations. 4% for ten days as a purge Horses 5oz daily in grain ration per horse Sheep - 2% by weight of total dry rations. 4% for ten days as a purge Goats - 2% by weight of total dry rations. 4% for ten days as a purge Large Dogs (over 25 kgs) 1 tablespoon per day in food Small Dogs (under 25 kgs) 1 teaspoon per day in food Cats 1 teaspoon per day in food A weekly check of livestock should be made through the first 45 day feeding period for evidence of reduction in protein content, parasites and ova in the faeces.
